How & why you should create a custom “404 Not Found” page on your website

Updated over a year ago

Ever experienced that moment when you click on a website link and encounter the classic "Oops, this page doesn't exist!" message?

When visitors land on a 'page not found' notice on your website, they often swiftly abandon ship because they can't find what they're seeking. The ultimate goal in the website game is to retain visitors. If they stumble upon a generic 'page not found' page, they're likely to exit your site promptly. However, with a little customization, you might just be able to keep them engaged.

Rather than blandly stating "404 PAGE NOT FOUND," consider a more human and engaging approach. This will captivate your visitors' attention and encourage them to explore further. Here are some creative ideas:

  • "Uh oh! You might feel lost, but don't rush away just yet!"

  • "Whoops, we can't seem to find the page you're searching for, but stick around..."

  • "Hey there! You've stumbled upon a page that doesn't exist (our bad!) - but check this out..."

How do you set up the custom 404/not-found page?

  1. Navigate to the website builder

  2. Check if you have an existing 404 or Page not found already set

  3. If so you can click into this and begin editing.

If not, you can create a new page and choose the "Page not found" page type.

Once this is created you can customise as you like.
